In the aftermath of Jan. 6, 2021, Congressman Kevin McCarthy said President Donald J. Trump needs to “accept his share of responsibility” for the events of that day. McCarthy called for Trump to be censured rather than impeached.

McCarthy made the comments while advocating against an effort to impeach President Trump. After speaking against the impeachment effort, McCarthy said the path to justice is still available, but shouldn’t be impeachment.

“That doesn’t mean the President is free from fault,” McCarthy said. “The President bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. These facts require immediate action of President Trump. Accept his share of responsibility, quell the brewing unrest and ensure President-Elect Biden is able to successfully begin his term.”

McCarthy then said Trump’s immediate action deserves congressional action, including a fact-finding commission and censure resolution.
