As the U.S. Senate debates the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) this week, a proposal to mandate that women register for the draft has received increasing pushback from the American people. In the last eight weeks, Family Research Council has facilitated nearly 200,000 messages to Congress opposing this dangerous mandate. The message FRC supporters are sending is clear. They want their representatives to oppose the NDAA, unless this mandate is removed. They understand the repercussions of this change, should it become law.
Lt. Gen. (Ret.) William G. Boykin, Family Research Council’s Executive Vice President made the following comments:
“Family Research Council honors our servicewomen. Women serve with great honor and distinction; however, they should not be forced into frontline (infantry, armor, special forces, etc.) combat. Mandating that women register for the draft would be detrimental to our military. Women in frontline combat have a higher likelihood of injury, leading to non-deployability and the compromising of lethality, readiness, and cohesion of certain frontline combat units. Studies and research by both the Army and Marines have born this out. While some women are able to meet the demands of frontline combat, the physical differences between men and women cannot be ignored. Fewer women than men can meet these demands and the random nature and the lowered fitness examination parameters of the draft are insufficient to ensure that only such highly-qualified women would be selected for frontline combat roles.”
Mary Beth Waddell, J.D., Family Research Council’s Director of Federal Affairs for Family and Religious Liberty further commented:
“This is not about equality for women. This is about pushing an agenda that seeks to eliminate the distinction of male and female. We have already seen how this agenda as been detrimental to the rights, safety, and privacy of women and girls. We are happy to see more than 200,000 of our fellow Americans standing up and letting their representatives know how strongly they feel about this important issue.”
