While only 38 percent of likely U.S. voters support taxpayer-funded reparation payments to the descendants of American slaves, sixty percent of Democrats support the idea.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has put together a plan to pay reparations to the descendants of slaves in his state.
Fifty-four percent of likely voters oppose the idea, including 42 percent who strongly oppose it. For California’s plan specifically, 56 percent oppose it, including 45 percent who strongly oppose it.
Just 15 percent of Republicans and 30 percent of unaffiliated voters agree with the California reparations plan.
When voters were provided information on the cost of California’s plan — $569 billion, which is more than the entire annual budget of the state — opposition grows even among Democrats.
