On Thursday, U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) questioned witnesses about the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing with U.S. Central Command. In his remarks, Mullin called out the lack of accountability within Biden’s Department of Defense and State Department following the failed withdrawal, and stressed the need for answers to prevent another U.S. foreign policy crisis in the future.

“The American withdrawal from Kabul in 2021 was a complete disaster brought on by systematic failures from the top down across multiple agencies. It’s not enough to just say this was a disaster and move on. Lives were lost, our posture on the world stage has been forever changed,” Mullin said.

“I have not seen a single person held accountable.

What does that say to our partners? Our partners that lost lives…His Royal Highness of UAE was even upset by it. He said, ‘If America was able to walk away from the billions of dollars that they spent in Afghanistan, what does that say about our region?’

We lost the lives of AMCITs [American Citizens] that did not have to be lost, not to mention our thirteen Marines. And no one, not a single person has been held accountable. Do you think that is right?

You cannot sit here and tell me that that was a successful withdrawal. Don’t you think someone should be held accountable? It was an absolute disaster.

Our adversaries and our allies are both taking a look at this. We look weak… it’s time for someone to be held accountable…We have to right this wrong,” Mullin concluded.
