A sophomore guard for Old Dominion collapsed during a game this weekend. Imo Essien was playing defense during a possession against Georgia Southern when he went down.

According to reports, Essien never lost consciousness. He was helped to his feet eventually ad walked off the court.

Old Dominion men’s basketball team put out a statement on Saturday about the incident. The university said Essien was evaluated by athletic training staff along with George Southern medical staff. He was responsive throughout ad sat with his team for the remainder of the game before driving home with the team.

Local reports indicate Essien will visit with a cardiologist to undergo examination to determine his next steps.

That same report states that Essien underwent COVID testing following the incident, but it came back negative.

Old Dominion had a vaccine mandate for students, but it was lifted on Jan. 31, 2022. Essien is a sophomore. It is unknown if he received the vaccine. More than 97 percent of Old Dominion students were fully vaccinated before the mandate was lifted, with 99.7 percent of students saying on campus fully vaccinated.
