Cynthia Millen is a ray of sanity in 2021.
Millen, a USA swimming official, resigned in protest of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. Millen had officiated USA swimming meets for three decades.
According to the Washington Examiner, Millen wrote she “can’t do this.”
Millen is hopeful others in the sport agree that Thomas has an advantage over actual females. Thomas competed for three years on the men’s team at the University of Pennsylvania.
Since claiming to be a woman, Thomas has set several school records and picked up a 38-second win in the 1,650-meter freestyle.
“I told my fellow officials that I can no longer participate in a sport that allows biological men to compete against women,” Millen’s letter said. “Everything fair about swimming is being destroyed.”
Millen is calling on her former officiating colleagues to deem Thomas ineligible to compete in women’s races.
Thomas was allowed to participate in the women’s competition after transitioning and completing one year of testosterone suppression treatments — meeting NCAA guidelines.
Millen said it is up to coaches and officials to provide a fair competition, which is not being done while allowing Thomas to swim against females.
According to Millen, leaders at USA Swimming are concerned about losing sponsorships and being portrayed as “non-inclusive.”
“But this is not being inclusive. This is being deceitful,” she said.
