On Tuesday, Congressman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) released bill text for more than 500 bills that reduce nondefense discretionary spending to pre-COVID levels. Together, these bills save the nation roughly $100 billion in fiscal year 2024 and $1 trillion over a decade. Paired with previous calls by the House Freedom Caucus to rescind unspent COVID-19 money, funding for IRS expansion, wasteful Green New Deal projects, and Biden’s student loan bailout, Congress can forestall raising the debt ceiling indefinitely.
“The Washington Uniparty has torpedoed our economy,” said Congressman Andy Biggs. “It’s long past time to rein in spending and eliminate wasteful spending programs.
“The nation faces roughly $32 trillion in debt and the Biden White House is asking Congress to raise the debt ceiling with no commitment to cut spending or make reforms. That’s unacceptable and asking for a monumental recession.
“Last week, I introduced more than 500 individual spending cut bills that will save the nation money in the short and long term. Despite what Joe Biden yells to the media, these proposals do not impact Social Security or Medicare benefits. The House Freedom Caucus debt ceiling proposal to Joe Biden, combined with my proposed individual spending cuts, will put the nation back on a path of fiscal sanity and avoid raising the debt ceiling.
“I encourage all of my congressional colleagues to join these efforts and applaud the ones who have already joined me. The Biden Administration can either be part of the solution or continue to contribute to the nation’s economic downfall.”
Cosponsors of the legislation include: Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ), Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT), and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
