U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) issued the following statement in response to General Mark Milley’s unannounced visit to Syria this weekend:
“General Mark Milley has traveled to Syria to justify America’s continued involvement in a Middle Eastern civil war. Jeffersonian Democracies cannot be built out of sand and blood and Arab militias alone. Syria is a quagmire of a tinderbox. America has no discernible interest in continuing to fund a fight where alliances shift faster than the desert sands.
Next week, my legislation to end U.S. involvement in Syria will be up for a vote. If General Milley wants this war so bad, he should explain what we are fighting for and why it is worth American treasure and blood. An America First foreign policy demands realism, rational thought, and seriousness,” Congressman Gaetz said.
Congressman Gaetz last month introduced a War Powers Resolution to direct President Joe Biden to remove the U.S. Armed Forces from Syria following a press release on February 17th from U.S. Central Command, which announced four servicemembers were wounded during a partnered U.S. and Syrian Democratic Forces helicopter raid in northeastern Syria.
