Name: Porsha Hart, Republican

Office/District: State Senate District 22

Hometown: Waukee

Profession: Consultant

Why running for office: “I have a heart for service. I have a heart for the state of Iowa and Senate District 22. I wanted to bring in my expertise and also a fresh perspective from a population health perspective to improve our great Senate District 22.

“Early childhood education and compulsory education also, and mental health. Our early childhood education in the state of Iowa, as a whole, is underfunded and based upon the interviews that I’ve had with several providers and even working some of them, there is a need for increased support, not only for providers but for parents. Also, there’s a mental health crisis throughout the entire country, especially considering the COVID-19 pandemic and supporting first responders, educators, as well as students from a trauma, informed care perspective.

Hart’s passion as a candidate comes from her spending years in the arena of women’s health studies. She is working on her Ph.D. in population health and higher education. Those issues are very personal for her.

Republican Sen. Charles Schneider is not seeking re-election. Hart is running in the Republican primary, against one other person.
