On Monday, Representative Roy sent a letter to Judith Faulkner, the CEO of Epic Systems, and Aliya Bhatia, the Executive Director of Vot-ER asking for confirmation that their voter registration programs are not registering noncitizens.
Rep. Roy writes“Despite the mass influx of illegal aliens into the United States since January 2021, the Epic Systems handbook referenced above makes no mention of steps health care providers should take to ensure non-citizens do not illegally register to vote in federal elections.”
Epic and Vot-ER’s strategy is to effectively turn hospitals into voter registration centers by inundating patients throughout their visit with information about registering to vote. However, Vot-ER’s vocal opposition to voter integrity efforts raises serious questions about its operations.
“Worse still, Vot-ER has actively worked against efforts to ensure non-citizens do not illegally register to vote in federal elections. On July 9, 2024, Vot-ER, a supposed “non-partisan” organization, signed a letter opposing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 8281), which passed the House of Representatives on a bipartisan basis and would require states to obtain proof of citizenship before registering an individual to vote.”
To ensure that both Epic Systems and Vot-ER are being responsible and only registering citizens, Representative Roy asked both organizations 5 questions.
- Please provide the number of individuals who have registered to vote in federal elections or requested a ballot since the Epic Systems and Vot-ER voter registration partnership began.
- Have any non-citizens attempted to register to vote under your joint voter registration efforts?
- What efforts are Epic Systems and Vot-ER taking to ensure that non-citizens do not illegally register to vote in federal elections?
- Does Epic Systems or Vot-ER provide guidance to health care providers to ensure non-citizen patients – who may not be of sound mind during their provider visit, may not speak English, etc. – are not pressured, or misled, to illegally register to vote?
- Does Epic Systems agree with Vot-ER’s decision to publicly oppose legislation that bolsters current law by requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections?
- Does Vot-ER believe that non-citizens should be allowed to vote in U.S. federal elections?
