Today students at more than 300 schools across the State of Iowa participated in the Fall 2019 Iowa Youth Straw Poll. The straw poll is part of the Elections 101 curriculum, which was developed by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate and written by Iowa teachers.
The straw poll results in the race for U.S. House of Representatives in the Iowa 2nd District were as follows (as of 4:10 P.M.):
Bobby Schilling (R), 40.3 percent
Rita Hart (D), 32.9 percent
Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R), 26.8 percent
Schilling released the following statement:
“Congratulations to all the kids across Iowa for participating in the Iowa Youth Straw Poll today. That is the most important thing we can do as Americans. It’s critical that we all get involved, stand up for what we believe in, and send a message to Washington, D.C. that this is a country of the people, by the people, for the people.
“I’m pretty confident in this generation of kids. They’re smart, they’re savvy, and they know how to demand accountability from politicians. We need more people like them engaging the process. I hope that today’s participants go on to vote in future elections and maybe even run for office down the road. Who knows? The 50th President of the United States might have voted today!“
