Bashing the U.S.A

It seems so strange that so many political people on the left are constantly telling us how awful the United States of America is, when most of the people in the world would gladly give everything they have to come here. If the far left was right, wouldn’t there be somewhere in the world, or in history, when their idea of the ideal society would have existed and prospered? Wouldn’t there be some example that they could point to where their far left ideas had worked out, and where people were happily living in that society. There is no such society. All efforts to establish a far left, socialist society have failed over the centuries.

The reason is very simple. If there is no connection between the work a person does and the compensation he or she receives, most people will decide that there is no reason for them to work hard. Of course, dictatorial regimes try to force people to work hard, but even the most totalitarian regimes cannot force people to work the way they do when they are compensated based on their output. Recent examples are the Soviet Union, Cuba and Venezuela. Since there is little to distribute, socialism does not work.

It does not matter what kind of distribution theories you are enforcing if you have little to distribute.

China Buys U.S. Corn

The United States Department of Agriculture reported on July 14 that China ordered 1,762,000 metric tons of corn for delivery in the 2020/2021 marketing year that begins September 1, 2020. According to Reuters this brings the total to 3.9 million tons or 154 million bushels of corn, that China has ordered for the coming marketing year. This is the largest purchase of U.S. corn ever by China according to the U.S.D.A. Though in the context of corn purchases by China, this is a large amount, China has not been one of our larger corn customers. This purchase will not have a big impact on the total amount of corn that we have on hand. Of course, there could be more purchases as time goes by.

Work Search Requirement

Iowa Workforce Development has announced that the work search requirement will be reinstated as of September 8. Here is their announcement:

“The work search requirement will be reinstated on September 8, 2020 for all claimants except as noted below. The work search must be a reasonable and honest effort to find suitable work and claimants must complete a minimum of two job contacts a week unless the work search requirement is waived. By conducting work searches, claimants are likely to find employment quicker.

If claimants refuse a job offer, they may lose their unemployment benefits. IWD had previously waived the work requirement for those impacted by layoffs and reductions in work hours since the beginning of the Pandemic. Claimants currently receiving Pandemic

Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits due to a medical diagnosis or lack of childcare directly related to COVID-19 will not be required to begin work searches at this time. We have also posted updates on our website regarding work search requirements.

There are currently over 58,000 job openings at https://www.iowaworks.gov(link is external).”
