State Senators Brad Zaun and Dan Dawson each filed resolutions last week calling for an Article V Convention of the States.
Zaun’s resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 1, calls for a convention to propose amendments to impose fiscal restraints, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and impose term limits on federal officials and members of Congress.
Zaun’s resolution states the founders of the Constitution empowered state legislators to be guardians of liberty against future abuses of power by the federal government. And it notes that the federal government has created a “crushing national debt” through improper and imprudent spending.
“The federal government has invaded the legitimate roles of the states through the manipulative process of federal mandates,” Zaun’s resolution states. “Most of which are unfunded to a great extent.”
It also states the federal government has ceased to live under a “proper interpretation” of the Constitution.
Dawson’s resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 2, also calls for a convention to impose fiscal restraints, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and impose term limits on persons in Congress while also requesting Congress to similarly propose such amendments.
Dawson’s resolution shares much of the same language as Zaun. It goes into more detail on the term limits idea, however.
Dawson’s resolution is opposed by the Iowa Chapter of Sierra Club and Iowa Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. The League of Women Voters of Iowa are undecided.
Zaun’s resolution is also opposed by the Iowa Chapter of Sierra Club and Iowa Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.
Nobody has registered in support of either resolution.
Respectfully there are many Iowa Legislators that support this resolution. I know of a dozen or more. An Article V convention is the only Constitutional method of putting DC back in it’s box. Washington will never restrict themselves so we must take our country back!
