On Thursday, Rep. Randy Weber (TX-14) led 23 of his House Republican colleagues in sending a letter to President Joe Biden warning him against federalizing the National Guard in Texas.

In the letter, lawmakers reminded President Biden that “under the United States Constitution that we are each sworn to uphold, Governor Abbott has been granted the authority to maintain and deploy the National Guard for domestic emergencies on Texas soil. Federalizing Texas troops would be an encroachment on Texas’ constitutionally protected sovereignty. We urge you to reconsider the policies that have created this crisis and, instead, to join Governor Abbott in protecting the American people from this invasion.”

“Governor Abbott has diligently safeguarded our citizens, with the Texas National Guard at the forefront in halting the incursion. Any endeavor by Joe Biden to usurp and federalize the National Guard not only constitutes an overstep but also flagrantly violates constitutional bounds,” said Rep. Weber. “We are sending an obvious caution against a proposal advocated by several of my Democrat counterparts. Joe Biden must prioritize the safety and sovereignty of our nation by supporting Governor Abbott’s efforts rather than undermining them.”
