In recognition that abortion disproportionately impacts Iowa’s African-American community, Iowans for LIFE produced a 9-part series during Black History Month titled, “Black Voices on Black Lives.”
Proponents of abortion rights assert that the act of terminating a pregnancy is devoid of physical, emotional, and spiritual impact on mothers. That’s not the case, according to the Black voices who participated in IFL’s series.
Recent data shows that 2212 African-American babies were born in Iowa in 2017, but that another 1856 were aborted. Tragically, according to these Black voices, this 46% abortion rate is typical nationwide for African-American community, nearly 4 times the abortion rate of white women.
Does it matter? Iowans for LIFE believes that the sociological impact of such family disruption on Iowa and the nation at large demands a closer look.
One writer, Amina Stock, a mother of 4, soon to be 5, said accurate information was withheld from her when she had an abortion. The aftermath was painful:
“Abortion offers no practical healing to the post-abortive mother who struggles from the physical trauma a procedure has left on her body, or the mental trauma a procedure has waged on her mind. Gas to the fire is when many in society will tell her the pain she is experiencing is not real and nothing to be ashamed of. Even more grievous is when a father is unable to grieve for the sake of his unborn child because he is a man. Families are left broken this way.”
Iowans need to know the seriousness that the trauma of abortion inflicts on its African-American population. The IFL series gives voice to these women. The entire series is available online at IowansForLife.org.
