A parent of a student in Iowa said their son was given detention for expressing the idea there are two genders.
The incident happened last year when the student was a seventh-grade student. A female student in the class sat behind him and, for several days in a row, would talk to the male student or anyone in proximity and discuss her opinions of how there are multiple genders.
“My son just listened initially, but became a little frustrated with the repeated conversation, so he began to question her,” the parent said. “He told her how he didn’t understand how she could believe there were more than two genders.”
The male student did not bring religion into the conversation initially, but the female student became “quite offensive and more confrontational” once she was questioned.
“After several days of going back and forth, my son then told her that he could not understand someone’s thought that there were more than two genders and told her, ‘my Bible and my God tell me there are two genders and only two genders,'” the parent said. “The other student reported him to the classroom teacher who then sent my son to the principal’s office for a detention.”
When told by the principal of the incident, the parent said her son would not be serving detention.
“I told her it is just as offensive to my son and my family as the other student is saying it is to her,” the parent said. “Unfortunately, the detention had been served prior to me being notified. The other student had no repercussions.”
Her son, as well as his friends who are also Christian, do not believe they can voice their opinions as it relates to Christianity without being silenced.
