The Republican primary in Iowa House District 60 is heating up. Incumbent State Rep. Jane Bloomingdale has consistently voted against pro-life legislation (Heartbeat Bill and the Protect Life Amendment) as well as opposed Education Savings Accounts for Iowa families.
Despite her anti-life voting record, Bloomingdale earned endorsements from U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst. Ernst called Bloomingdale a “strong, proven and conservative leader and winner.”
Grassley said Bloomingdale is a “fiscal conservative fighter.”
Here is who Bloomingdale doesn’t fight for — unborn babies or the sanctity of life. She also doesn’t fight for Iowa families who want their kids to have access to a portion of the state funding used for education at the institution best for the family.
It has been sad to see so many supposed “pro-life” Republicans in the Iowa House rally behind someone like Bloomingdale who has damaged pro-life efforts of Republicans considerably over the last five years.
Thankfully there is an honest organization letting voters in the district know.
Students for Life Action sent a mailer letting voters know that Bloomingdale voted against an effort by Rep. Jeff Shipley to ban chemical abortion drugs, which now account for more than 50 percent of abortions.
“These dangerous abortion pills can lead to injury, infertility and death,” the mailer said. “But when Rep. Shipley brought the bill forward for a vote, Rep. Jane Bloomingdale voted NO, allowing the deadly practice of chemical abortion to continue.”
It’s another vote against the pro-life movement in Iowa.
Meanwhile, Students for Life Action let voters know Deb Hild, the pro-life alternative to Bloomingdale, has pledged in writing to vote pro-life if elected. She pledged to support for banning dangerous chemical abortions as well.
Hild has been endorsed by a number of conservative Iowans.
Congressman Steve King called Hild a “principled conservative” who “puts her deep and foundational commitment to our Constitution and Republican Platform ahead of political expediency.”
“Her strongest conviction is that Life begins the moment of conception,” King said. “As the national author of the ‘Heartbeat Bill’ and especially as we anticipate a Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade, where abortion decisions revert back to the states, I implore you to vote for Deb Hild.
“Iowa’s 60th District is pro-life and you deserve a pro-life representative. Your current representative blocked the Pro-Life Amendment that would have otherwise been on the ballot this November. Personal relationships aside, your vote can help save the lives of thousands of Iowa’s most previous and innocent. Please vote for Deb Hild in the June 7 Republican primary.”
State Sen. Dennis Guth has also endorsed Hild.
“I find Deb’s strong stand on protecting life and religious freedom, as well as giving parents a choice in the education of their children, a breath of fresh air,” Guth said. “After seeing many of these bills pass the Senate only to die in the House, it is time for a change. Deb Hild will work hard for the things that the pro-life, freedom-loving people of northern Iowa deserve.”
Representative Sandy Salmon also endorsed Hild.
“(Hild) and Bloomingdale hold the same views on the budget and tax issues, but when it comes to the pro-life issue, the protection for unborn babies, they are miles apart,” Salmon said. “Deb is the strong pro-life candidate in this race and her opponent has voted against both the Protect Life Amendment and the Heartbeat Bill. It is unacceptable to re-elect someone opposed to putting pro-life protections in our laws.”
