Democrat State Rep. Ross Wilburn, who is also chair of the Iowa Democrat Party, called Friday a “dark day for freedom” after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
“It is a dark day for freedom in our nation as we reckon with the consequences of a 50-years-long vendetta against the freedoms protected by Roe v. Wade,” he said. “Iowa Democrats will continue to fight for every Iowan’s right to decide for themselves if, when and with whom they want to have a family. And this decision has only strengthened our resolve to see these personal freedoms restored.”
Wilburn criticized Senate Republicans for blocking Democrat efforts to write protections of Roe into law.
“We must elect Iowa Democrats at every level of government in order to protect abortion rights,” Wilburn said. “Kim Reynolds and Iowa Republicans will do everything in their power to outlaw abortion in our state.”
It is sad to see Wilburn, a black man, so committed to a cause that has racist roots. In its decision, the Supreme Court notes Liberty Counsel’s amicus brief, which argues the roots of abortion are “motivated by a desire to suppress the size of the African American population.”
“And it is beyond dispute that Roe had had that demographic effect,” the Court’s ruling said. “A highly disproportional percentage of aborted fetuses are black.”
