Democrat State Representative Sharon Steckman spoke against Senate File 496 on Tuesday. The bill deals with parental rights in education. But during her comments on the bill, Steckman attacked Republicans for protecting kids from sex-change treatments and surgeries.
Steckman cited language in the bill that declares parents bear the ultimate responsibility and have the fundamental, constitutionally protected right to make decisions affecting their children — except for Senate File 538, which banned radical, dangerous, experimental sex-change treatments and surgeries on kids.
Steckman said Republicans are “singling out” certain parents.
However, no parent in the state of Iowa can allow their child to undergo a radical, experimental, dangerous sex-change treatment or procedure.
So no parent is being “singled out.”
“You don’t have that right,” Steckman said. “I find that disgusting.”
Steckman said nothing in the bill promotes cooperation and she would be opposing the Parental Rights in Education bill.
