On Thursday, Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Education and the Workforce Committee Vice Chair Mary Miller (R-IL) issued the following statement regarding a newly launched Title IX investigation into the Sun Prairie Area School District that comes after the lawmakers sent a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona outlining serious concerns related to the safety of female students:
“We are pleased to see that the Department has taken heed of our letter – as well as the concerns raised by parents in the Sun Prairie Area School District – and is now moving forward with an investigation into this matter. This action is long overdue, and we expect these proceedings to be thorough and substantive every step of the way. Parents across the nation want reassurance that their children’s schools are upholding student privacy and safety – anything less is unacceptable.”
Maxx and Miller sent a letter to Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona raising concerns about a Wisconsin school district’s Title IX policies after it was reported that a male student—claiming to be female—was permitted to shower with female students. The report indicated that the female students immediately left the locker room after the male student exposed his genitalia to them. The Members called on the Department’s Office for Civil Rights to open a Title IX investigation or compliance review of the school district to determine what Title IX policies and procedures the district had in place and whether or not they were followed.
