On Tuesday we told you about an Iowa State professor called Kelly Reddy-Best who offered students points for declaring their preferred pronouns and instructed students to watch a video on BDSM. You can read about that here.

It turns out that isn’t the only concerning portion of the class.

Looking ahead it appears students will learn about “sex and gender” in terms of transitioning, wearing binders, tucking their genitals, examining “social justice issues” as it relates to dress and appearance of transgender and nonbinary people and “deconstructing” one’s own perspectives and approach to understanding the dress and appearance of the transgender and nonbinary communities in the U.S.

As we’ve seen among the Left, sex is defined by biology — reproductive organs, chromosomes, hormones, secondary sex characteristics — while gender is defined as “the social construction of femininity and masculinity.

“Gender is a performance of mannerisms, posture, movement, vocal tone, word choice and dress,” the text states.

Being “cisgender,” meaning someone whose sex is the same as their gender identity, is an “unearned and unrecognized privilege.”

On the other hand, “transgender” is a term used for those whose so-called gender identity doesn’t match with their sex. The term “transexual” is used for those who often, but not always, undergo transition processes.

Students are required to read two articles —

National Center for Transgender Equality. (2018, October 5). Understanding Non-Binary People: How to Be Respectful and Supportive (link is actually broken)

National Center for Transgender Equality. (2016, July 9). Understanding Transgender People: The Basics

Transitioning is defined as changing someone’s gender expression to match their gender identity. However, the process of transition includes much more than “gender expression” as hormone therapy and surgeries are included.

Here is a video students are to watch:

Roman men wearing togas were an example of gender expression across time and culture, according to the text.

Students are then taught about “trans gear.” Chest binders compress the “chest tissue” for masculine gender expression for women.

Students are required to read:

Health impact of chest binding among transgender adults: A community-engaged, cross-sectional study, Culture, Health & Sexuality, 19:1, 64–75

They’re also instructed to watch this video to learn about using a chest binder safely:

And then there is “packing.” This is an object placed in pants to give the appearance of a bulge. Students are told to watch this video:

And then they’re told about “tucking,” which is “arranging the external genitals between the legs and clothing.” There’s also a video for that…

In 2023, Reddy-Best had a reported pay of $117,147 according to public records.
