Republican Congressman Zach Nunn and Democrat challenger Lanon Baccam appeared in a debate on Tuesday night. After answering the initial question about abortion, the moderator asked Baccam a simple question…

“Just to clarify, do you believe at any point that, in a woman’s pregnancy, that abortion should be illegal?”

Baccam answered:

“So Iowans have had Roe as a law of the land for almost 50 years. That is the space in which they are comfortable. There’s only one person on this stage right now who will stand up for women’s rights and that is me. Unfortunately, the congressman supports this abortion ban here in Iowa. So abortion is now banned before most women even know they’re pregnant. This is exactly what he wanted. What’s true here is that women were comfortable and families were comfortable with where Roe was. We need to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. In Congress, I will do that.”

Nunn, meanwhile, said he is pro-life and has voted for exceptions for rape, incest and the health of the mother. However, he said there shouldn’t be a federal abortion ban. He also spoke in support of IVF access. He also called for over-the-counter birth control for women.
