Freshmen and sophomores at Gladbrook-Reinbeck were provided instruction by a Planned Parenthood representative. The presentation was part of the district’s health curriculum.

Superintendent Caleb Bonjour said the purpose for hosting a representative from Planned Parenthood was to provide students information on various forms of birth control.

“This particular presentation emphasized that abstinence is the most effective form of birth control while also educating students on the effectiveness of other methods in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs),” Bonjour said. “The discussion did not include information on abortion.”

The health class will also include discussions on promoting mental and emotional health, personal health and wellness, safety and injury prevention, drug and tobacco use prevention and sexual health.

Parents were notified about the Planned Parenthood presentation in advance. Permission slips were sent home outlining the content of the class, including participation of Planned Parenthood. Parents were afforded the opportunity to opt their children out of the presentation.

Bonjour said a representative from Planned Parenthood was selected “to provide accurate information on birth control options.” The district will have other professionals who contribute to the health curriculum as well — including a local minister.

“We aim to provide a well-rounded and comprehensive health education for our students,” Bonjour said.
