I am very privileged to study at Drake University, but the accountability to payback my loans rests on my success alone. We all know people who make sacrifices to avoid debt or forge their own paths to success. My brother, who took loads of AP courses in high school, my friends serving in the military while attending college, my cousins who chose trade school or community college instead, and many of our parents who worked overtime to pay off their loans. Student loans are a heavy burden, but none of those people have any business inheriting the debt of my degree.

Zach Nunn recognizes that the cost of these so-called government student loan “cancellations” will fall on hardworking blue-collar Iowans, many of whom didn’t go to college. How is that fair? It’s simple: there is no such thing as “canceling” debt. College students make up the top percent of earners in the long-run, and as a student who believes in equality, the last thing we need is for working-class Iowans to pay for a bail-out for the middle and upper class. We need to teach students financial literacy and responsibility. If you take out a loan, you pay it back – period. These government bail-outs will only inflate the value of a college education, worsen the debt crisis, and make it harder for my future kids to go to college.

Like many others, I believe in accountability and fairness. Zach Nunn will make sure that I won’t be a part of the generation that eliminates personal responsibility, and that’s why I am proud to vote for him on November 5th.
