The Waterloo School District reportedly sent a letter to about “changes to federal immigration policies” and “assured” the community of the measures it has within its schools.
The district said that the law guarantees all student receive free public education regardless of immigration status. It also said the district does not collect or maintain information about a student’s immigration status. Requests from immigration officials to access information or communicate with a student will be immediately referred to the district office.
“We will work closely with legal counsel to ensure compliance with the law while safeguarding students’ privacy rights,” the letter states.”
The district added that any law enforcement action involving the schools “must comply with proper legal authority.”
Building principals, it said, know the policies and processes in place to “protect” the students.
“While following the law, we will prioritize protecting students’ constitutional and legal rights,” the letter said. “We will not share student information or grant law enforcement building access unless legally required to do so.”
The letter was signed by superintendent Jared Smith.
