United States Sen. Chuck Grassley was asked what he believes penalties for mothers who have abortions as well as doctors who perform abortions should be.

Grassley said he doesn’t believe there will be anything further on abortion at the federal level. And he doesn’t foresee any states imposing penalties on women or doctors who have or perform abortions.

“I suppose there’s 50 different answers for what the states might come up with, but I don’t visualize any state putting a mother in prison because she had an abortion and I think that there would be not even doctor’s put in jail. But I do think that there would be some penalty for people conducting something that’s against the law — but that would be up to the individual states,” Grassley said.

He was then asked if he believes abortion is murder and if he does believe abortion is murder then why wouldn’t he support putting the mother and/or the doctor in prison.

“This whole decision was based on the history of our country during the period of time after the 14th Amendment was adopted according to what Alito wrote and I would say that there wasn’t anything like that in practice in the Untied States. If there is, I’m not aware of it,” he said.
