On October 19th, the Michigan State Senate passed a package of pro-abortion bills, including repealing a 24-hour waiting period to obtain an abortion, as well as eliminating health and safety regulations for abortion facilities. The bill will now go to the Michigan House of Representatives, where Democrats hold a two-seat majority. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has vowed to sign the legislation if it comes to her desk.

Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, released the following statement:

“Last November, Michigan added a so-called right to ‘reproductive freedom’ to its state constitution. It was marketed to the good people of Michigan as a moderate action that would merely revert the state to the status quo before the overturn of Roe v. Wade. That was a lie. As we speak, the abortion industry and its chosen politicians are working to eliminate basic health and safety standards that protect mothers and their children from the abuses of the abortion industry. Among the protections being repealed is the rule prohibiting university health clinics from giving referrals for abortion. An additional repeal is removing the need for pregnant mothers to provide written consent for abortion, a protection meant to shield mothers from pervasive abortion pressure and coercion. Repealing these life-saving rules is scandalous and a tragic.

“This abortion extremism should also alarm Ohioans who are preparing to vote this November on an amendment to their state constitution that could enshrine abortion. While the language of that amendment appears moderate, it is deceptive. Adopting the amendment will unleash a torrent of deadly abortion extremism in Ohio. The Michigan House of Representatives should reject the deadly abortion extremism coming from the Michigan State Senate, and the people of Ohio must heed this warning and vote “NO” on Issue 1.”
