Children 3-6 years old are the intended audience of a book featured on the shelf of a library in conservative Sioux County. “Not He or She, I’m Me” is a new book offered at the Orange City Public Library. The book is featured prominently in the children’s section.

“Not He or She, I’m Me” is focused on a “nonbinary child. It starts right away with the declaration by the main character that it is “not he or she, I’m me.” The next page makes clear “not her, not him, I’m them.”

The main character, however, is just one person. Regardless, that’s the theme of the book. A non-binary little kid who goes about its day proclaiming “not he or she, I’m me” and “not her or him, I’m them.”

“Them with my friends and them at home. Them even when alone,” it continues.

Such a book would be prohibited from being in an Iowa school library if the school has students up to sixth grade. Yet it sits atop the shelf, prominently displayed, for preschool children to check out in Orange City.
