Name: Cynthia Paschen, Democrat
Office/District: State Senate District 24
Hometown: Ames
Profession: Volunteer with Mary Greely Medical Center Hospice.
Why running for office: “I am running for the seat currently held by Sen. Behn because I was invited to run. Two guys from Boone County said to me on the evening of March 1 at a chili supper, Tim Winter, who ran against Robert Bacon, and a guy named David Weaver who ran against Phil Thompson, said I should run.
“I live in (Sen. Herm) Quirmbach’s district. So I said you guys need to find me a place to live. I want a house in the country where I can have old dogs and watch the sun go down every night. They said they’d help me find a place. I’m running because I was invited to run and I have run in the past. I ran in the 2014 June primary. I primaried Herman Quirmbach.”
Paschen said she is in working on purchasing a property in Hamilton County, but does not currently live in the district.
“Hopefully I will get that property because I’m totally in love with that community.”
Her dad’s cousin used to run Oppedal Furniture in Jewell. She said that connection helps her make connections in the community.
“I’m fixing to be honest about this,” she said. “I want to be part of the Hamilton County community and help them resurrect their failed grocery store and support South Hamilton High football, basketball and volleyball. I want to be part of the community.”
