Events are underway at the University of Iowa to help students “cope” with the results of America’s democratic election on Tuesday night in which President Donald J. Trump won his bid for the White House with resounding support.
A person called Emily Hill, who appears to be listed as the associate director of the University of Iowa Honors Program, sent a message to Intro to Honors students that she wanted them to be “aware” of some “pop-up post-election support events” the program is hosting.
On Thursday, Shaun Vecera facilitated a cogitative reappraisal workshop, which is a “scientifically baked strategy for changing the way you think about challenging situations.”
“By adjusting your perspective, you can reduce stress, enhance emotional resilience and improve your overall well-being,” Hill wrote.
Today (Friday, Nov. 8), there was a yoga session to destress. There was also a “mindfulness workshop” with University Counseling Services to learn about different mindfulness and calming techniques.
On Tuesday, Nov. 12 there will be a “listening circle” hosted by Sherry Watt from 1-2 p.m. in BHC 440.
All of the events count towards the Honors event and reflection requirement for the course.
A person called Veronica Sanchez, who is listed as administration and communications coordinator for the University of Iowa Honors Program, sent a message telling recipients it is “completely natural to feel a mix of emotions after an election.” Relief, frustration, confusion or “even anxiety,” she wrote.
