Conservative influencer Matt Walsh expressed curiousity on Tuesday after Sen. Lindsey Graham introduced a national 15-week abortion ban.
Walsh said he is “all for” any abortion ban, but noted there is “no chance” the legislation even gets a vote with the current Congress.
“Which means that this is a political play by Graham,” he said. “And it’s a really remarkably stupid political play.”
Walsh said Graham should have aimed for a 25- or 30-week ban, which would force Democrats to defend “something heinous and extreme.”
“I support a ban from conception but as a pure political move — which is all this is right now, or can be — that’s what would make the most sense,” Walsh wrote. “And considering that Graham has never shown any great passion for the pro-life cause, the timing here seems incredibly suspicious.”
Walsh said those cheering Graham’s bill are “naive in the extreme.”
“It’s a 100 percent certainty that this bill will not get a vote, much less will it pass and be signed into law,” Walsh wrote. “Proposing a bill that can’t pass only ever makes sense as a political strategy. So what is the strategy here?
“If you’re going to propose doomed legislation designed to force the Dems to defend something extreme and horrific, a federal ban on child castration would make sense. But Republicans are too damned stupid to think of that. So instead they give a gift to the Dems.
“Force the Dems to go into the midterms arguing in favor of castrating little boys. That’s not a conversation they want to have. Which is exactly why you should force them to have it. A federal abortion ban is EXACTLY the conversation the Dems want to have. Which is why you don’t do this before the midterms. Unless you actually want your side to lose.”
