In an article on December 21, 2022, in the City Journal, Asra Q. Nomani wrote that two administrators at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, VA, have been withholding notifications of National Merit awards. For the most part, these awards were withheld from Asian students, “thus denying students the right to use those awards to boost their college-admission prospects and earn scholarships.”
Apparently, this is a result of the district’s policy of “equal outcomes for every student, without exception.” The district also has implemented an equitable grading policy which eliminates zeros and gives students a grade of 50 percent just for showing up.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards students with a National Merit Award but the school officials did not inform the students or their families of the honors, thus depriving them of possible college scholarships. Over a period of five years, withholding this information affected the lives of at least 1200 students at Thomas Jefferson.
By January 20, 2023, it had been revealed that at least eighteen schools in the Washington, DC area had been involved in the war on merit.

Tiffany Justice is a wife and mom of four school-aged children. In 2016 she stepped up to serve for 4 years on the School District of Indian River County, FL School Board. She believes that kids in public school deserve innovation and parents have the right to know the union interference and government bureaucracy that is keeping that innovation from happening in their children’s district.
Tiffany believes that the citizens have to constantly remind our local government officials and community members that the children are the first priority. Children cannot advocate for themselves, making it our duty to stand up for children’s rights. She believes that parental involvement is a main driver of school success. Therefore, it is imperative that parents be welcomed, heard, and encouraged to be an active participant both at the school and school board levels.
Tiffany has been married to Mark for 19 years and they have four children.
