Anti-choice activists in Waukee gathered on Sunday afternoon to write postcards opposing school choice. Wendy Marsh, a member of the Waukee School Board, said 600 postcards were written and will be delivered to the following legislators early Monday morning:

The anti-choice event was also plugged at a legislative update hosted by the district on Saturday.

Waukee Superintendent Brad Buck has been vocal in his opposition to educational freedom and school choice for Iowa families.

At Saturday’s legislative update, Buck was asked if the district is working to figure out why families are leaving.

“Many of the families that are leaving us now have philosophical differences between what should happen in public school based on their frame of reference and what the broader frame of reference is in what’s happening in public school,” Buck said. “So that’s a nice way to say, ‘I disagree with what’s happening in public schools. I don’t want my children a part of what’s happening there, and so I’m going to take my child, my children somewhere else.'”

He called those reasons “points of friction” and said they are based on things public schools are going to do for kids in a “public environment.”

“We respect all kids. We understand that kids have a variety of backgrounds and experiences and so we have an inclusive mindset as it relates to children,” Buck said.

Many of the families leaving do not have the same mindset, he said.

“I’m trying to say this in a nice politically whatever way — there are things we’re going to do in public ed that families are going to disagree with and they’re going to look at a choice,” Buck said. “Respectfully, if this ain’t, if this isn’t right for you, that’s cool. Um, I think the nuance is, who, who should pay for that.” (This story originally quoted Buck as saying he is not a huge fan of choice. The audio for the video is very quiet. However, after Buck publicly said he said he is a huge fan of choice, we have updated his quote.)

Buck’s anti-choice sentiments are disappointing considering his district has been one of the most woke in Iowa the last few years.

And, based on his comments, he doesn’t appear to believe it is anything the district needs to change.
