The Des Moines Public School District updated its Facebook profile picture on Tuesday to encourage everyone to wear a mask in school. Iowa law prohibits schools from requiring masks to be worn, so the district is instead going to strongly encourage them by essentially shaming people into wearing them.

“Wearing is Caring. Mask Up In School,” the photo says.

Educators in Iowa have speculated on social media whether they can “incentivize” mask-wearing in the classroom since they cannot require it. The 2021-22 school year will be interesting.

The district said the school board is considering an online option for elementary students this school year.
