Prohibiting instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation to students in kindergarten through third grade. House File 8 also requires human growth and development instruction in the kindergarten program to be age-appropriate and research-based.

Representative Skyler Wheeler sponsored the legislation. It has 33 cosponsors.

Florida passed a law last year prohibiting schools from teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity for K-3 students.

There is a pair of bills in Texas that resemble the Florida legislation. One bill expands the restriction to fifth grade. Another extends it to eighth.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa, ACLU of Iowa, Interfaith Alliance of Iowa Action Fund, Iowa Safe Schools and One Iowa have all registered against the bill as of Wednesday evening.

No groups have registered in support of the bill.

One Iowa Action put out an action alert earlier Wednesday encouraging people to contact legislators regarding House File 8.

  1. Just K-3??? It should be banned completely from all government schools at all levels. If parents want their children indoctrinated, let them find a private school that teaches this foul stuff.
