Andrew Onsgard is running for Iowa House District 97 as a Libertarian. Onsgard is running against Democrat Ken Croken. There is no Republican candidate in the race.

Here is House District 97:

  1. At what point of pregnancy should abortion no longer be an option? Both legalizing abortion and restricting abortion will necessarily violate the negative rights of individuals.  Therefore, governments should pass neither a criminal law punishing abortion, nor take a position upholding it’s legality.  Instead, we ought to let the negative externalities associated with abortion be adjudicated before civil judiciaries.
  2. Do you support allowing eminent domain to be used for a private, for-profit project? No.
  3. Do you support Education Savings Accounts for Iowa families? At this time I support any account which allows Iowans to reduce their tax burden, thereby also reducing the amount of money available for the state to squander.
  4. Do you support legislation removing sexually explicit, pornographic materials from school libraries? Irrelevant; all schools should be privatized.  Force need not be used; parents can make this decision voluntarily via a free market of competing institutions.
  5.  Do you support a bill requiring schools to communicate “preferred pronouns” of students to their parents? Irrelevant; all schools should be privatized.  Force need not be used; parents can make this decision voluntarily via a free market of competing institutions.
  6. Would you support removing gender identity from the Iowa Civil Rights Code? Relating to public acts – No.  Relating to private acts – Yes, and all other protected characteristics ought to be stricken from the Civil Rights Act code too.
  7. Would you support a bill banning “gender-affirming treatment” of minors in Iowa? No, however I would advocate for a change to age-of-consent laws which would likely have a similar effect.
  8. Would you support a bill allowing one legislative candidate to donate some of their campaign funds to another legislative candidate directly, which was outlawed in the 1990s? I am not familiar with the details surrounding this law.  It would be irresponsible to advocate for either side at this time.
  9. Do you support reforming the Governor’s Emergency Powers in Iowa? Yes.
  10. Do you support reforming and/or repealing Iowa’s “Certificate of Need” laws? Yes.
  11. Do you support a Religious Freedom & Restoration Act for Iowans? I have read Senate File 508 and find that it does not advocate strongly enough for an individual’s religious freedom in the face of an overbearing state.  “Shall not be infringed” would garner my support.
  12. Do you support efforts to stop Big Tech censorship in Iowa? Yes.
  13. In Iowa, the penalty is the same for kidnapping and raping a minor as it is for kidnapping, raping and murdering a minor. Would you support a bill allowing for the death penalty in cases where a minor is kidnapped, raped and murdered? Irrelevant; capital punishment has been abolished in Iowa since 1965.
  14. Do you support mandatory E-Verify for Iowa businesses? No.
  15. Do you support legislation prohibiting an employer from asking an employee for his or her COVID vaccination status? No, but I encourage consumers and employees alike to boycott such an establishment.
  16. Do you support legislation prohibiting discrimination based on COVID vaccination status? Publicly – Yes.  Privately – No.
  17. Should minors be allowed to attend drag shows? Yes.
  18. Do you support allowing the sale of raw milk? Yes.
  19. Would you support getting rid of no-excuse absentee voting? Yes.
