On Thursday, Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released the following statement in response to Meta’s decision to allow election-denying political advertisements on Facebook and Instagram for the 2024 election:

“Meta’s decision to greenlight election denial ads on Facebook and Instagram for the upcoming 2024 election demonstrates a reckless disregard for the truth and our democracy. We all saw the results of allowing misinformation and election denialism to spread unchecked on January 6.

“At a time when accountability and transparency in elections should be paramount, Meta’s decision will undermine faith in the electoral process. Allowing the spread of misinformation erodes public trust and jeopardizes the integrity of our democratic institutions. Meta’s decision not only allows debunked lies to spread, but also sets a dangerous precedent, enabling the deceitful manipulation of elections by the election-denier-in-chief Donald Trump.

“Meta’s decision to profit off of election lies is another step backward at a time when our democracy is already on fragile ground.

“As moderators of online platforms that wield immense influence, Meta is again failing to live up to its responsibilities and weakening the foundation of a democracy — free and fair elections.”
