A book called “Gender Queer” has been at the center of the debate on having pornographic materials in school libraries. We published this story nearly two years ago, which features about 11 pages from the book, and it was flagged for containing adult sexual content by Google and violating Facebook’s community standards on sexual activity.
The debate has raged for the last two years. And it resurfaced earlier this month when Republican Sen. John Kennedy read a portion at a Senate hearing. You can watch it below:
After Kennedy’s read-aloud, The Washington Post published a story with the book’s author, Maia Kobabe. This piece stood out:
“It keeps being called a children’s book. Sen. Kennedy implied it was a children’s book. But I think that’s coming from a misreading of the comic-book form. “Gender Queer” is a comic, and in full color, but that doesn’t mean it’s for children. I originally wrote it for my parents, and then for older teens who were already asking these questions about themselves. I don’t recommend this book for kids!”
