Ames Public Library is celebrating “Juneteenth” with a display called “Degrees of Freedom” by Jordan “KNWSLF” Brooks.
The display is up through June 30.
Included are a number of quotes hanging on the wall, such as:
“How do you claim person of color but aspire for whiteness?”
“Your discomfort holding your family accountable for their racism is not equal to the pain of me watching them kill my family.”
“How do you suggest I appeal to the humanity of those who do not even consider me human?”
“Your melanin is monumental. There is nothing minor or marginal about you!”
“While we celebrate our ‘freedom,’ you confront your bondage to violence.”
Juneteenth is described as a celebration of black people’s freedom and an example of white people’s lust for dominance.
