On March 2, 2022, the Iowa Senate passed a bill that essentially states only biological females can play female sports. Hard to believe a law is necessary for this, but it’s 2022 and the idea that biological boys can and should play girls’ sports is “progress” according to Democrats.

Not one single Democrat in the Iowa legislature stood with science, fairness or Iowa girls. Not one Democrat voted to protect women’s sports.

Democrat Senate leader Zach Wahls called the legislation “exclusionary” and “divisive.” He said the issue isn’t about fairness to GOP politicians, but instead scoring political points.

Democrat Sen. Claire Celsi said not allowing biological boys to play girls’ sports forces schools to violate the United States Constitution. Celsi said the bill is legally risky and also “petty, partisan and hateful.”

Democrat Sen. Pam Jochum referred to “artificial boundaries” in her remarks, noting the need to become a more inclusive society and a better people. The bill, she said, is “not the Iowa that I love and know.”

Democrat Sen. Eric Giddens read a letter from constituents that said passing the bill will “cause death.”

A number of other Democrats spoke against the bill.

It is astonishing to think not one single Democrat in the Iowa Senate sided with science, sided with fairness or sided with Iowa girls.
