During Tuesday’s discussion at a legislative briefing of sorts hosted by the Iowa Association of School Boards, the organization’s lobbyist talked briefly about the Parental Rights in Education bill.

“The Parental Bill of Rights, I know you’re frustrated by that, but our view, and this is something that Siobhan (Schneider) and I agree on, is that it essentially just says what you already allow parents to do,” said Emily Piper. “It is designed to kind of head off the crazy.”

Piper said sometimes passing laws to do what we already do is a way to “divert attention away from things that might be worse.”

“We’re very comfortable with that bill,” Piper said. “It’s one way to kind of divert attention. It also gives us an opportunity as boards to say we are about parents having a right to be engaged in their children’s education. Whether or not they choose to take advantage of that right is up to them.”

  1. Jacob, THANK YOU for exposing the truth. ALWAYS. The way lobbyists and BOE members are willing to manipulate our children’s lives is appalling. Why not write laws to INVITE parents to participate, rather than holding them at arms length and intimidating them. We are talking about our CHILDREN, the future of our nation. Parents must take notice. Must stand up for their children, for surely many of the people we elect to protect and prepare them for a future of truth, freedom and blessing are simply looking for was to distract parents from the real issues that are harming our children and to further the global agenda of crushing our rights.
