Democrat State Rep. Sharon Steckman is a vocal critic of school choice in Iowa and a former school teacher. She liked a tweet on Twitter that indicates she doesn’t hold families who choose private schools in high regard.

“People go to private Christian schools because those schools can discriminate against students with special needs so then there (sic) results look better (and whiter.) Many private schools were set up when Court ordered public schools to let blacks attend.”

Wow. So, according to Steckman, families who choose private Christian schools are racist and do not like kids who are “special needs.”

  1. Or because they don’t want to be controlled by the government, or because they don’t want their kids to be learning from a false curriculum, or because they want so boundaries for their kids in the school. Most private schools are far more invested in the kids there because they are pay for the education, vs a lot of the kids at the government school their parent barely pays anything toward it.

  2. Wow is right. You missed her point by a mile. You have completely twisted her words and meaning to suit your agenda. Mrs. Steckman is well liked and respected by people in both parties. She is definitely educations strongest ally. Do better.

  3. Christian schools don’t “discriminate “ against special needs kids. Newman immediately accepted my oldest daughter without a moment’s hesitation. They tried to meet her needs. They just didn’t have the educational services that she needed . The services are only available at public schools due to the state mandates regarding funds for those students. Maybe the state should “do better’ .

In fact even though we lived in Mason City – we chose to send both of our daughters to Clear Lake because MasonCity schools were substandard to our expectations and especially their special education department.

  4. So what’s her point? Being liked has nothing to do with the policies being pushed on public schools with pornographic material in books and drag queens dancing in class to young children. What is her position on these happening around the state in public schools? Where are the morals and decency in schools?
