Democrat State Senators Rob Hogg and Liz Mathis proposed Senate File 58 earlier this year during the legislative session. The bill would require human growth and development instruction by school boards to include information regarding dating violence and voluntary consent to engage in sexual activity.

The “instruction” would be “age-appropriate and research-based.”

Each school board is already required to provide instruction regarding human sexuality; self-esteem; stress management; interpersonal relationships; domestic abuse; HPV and the availability of a vaccine to prevent HPV; and AIDS.

The requirement exists for grades 1-12.
