The Ankeny Community School District ordered a number of books on Oct. 22, 2020. This order, which ended up closing the district $1,846.01, included both “Gender Queer” and “All Boys Aren’t Blue.”

An Ankeny mom read from the book “All Boys Aren’t Blue” at a recent board meeting. You can read about it here, or watch it below.

“Gender Queer” has drawn plenty of attention, mainly for its sexually explicit images. You can see some of those here, but be warned, they aren’t appropriate.

In all, the order included 107 books. Each book was listed on the invoice.

Jennifer Jamison, the district’s Chief Financial Officer and Board Secretary, signed the invoice from Follett, the company that sold the books. Tom Honz was listed as the buyer on the large order. Honz is the digital learning teacher at Ankeny Centennial.

There was an additional order that listed Dr. Jen Lindaman as the buyer for just “All Boys Aren’t Blue.” This order was placed Nov. 4, 2021. Jennifer Jamison also signed off to approve the purchase on this order. While Lindaman was listed as the buyer, the book was purchased by Jana Engebretson according to the order form. Engebretson is a curriculum assistant.

The Iowa Standard contacted those individuals named on the invoices. If we hear anything from any of them, we’ll publish an update.
